Favorite place to write?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Andrea @ 2:06 pm

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to try and start some bloggy convo with others about their habits and inspiration for writing.

Where is your favorite place to write? Do you find it hard to get “in the zone” anywhere else?

Me, I like to write outside mostly. I find it hard to write in my home, simply because there’s always something else that needs to be done. Coffee shops and parks are 2 places that I always feel compelled to pull out my journal and jot down thoughts.

  1. I have to agree, writing outside is the best. I love writing on the patio of our apartment early on saturday and sunday mornings because everyone is still asleep.

I also like writing with the laptop on the couch, though that is only when the hubby is off to class and house is very quiet.

On vacation because we often camp or rent cabins, I tend to write on the porches or in the middle of the woods, on mountain tops, on trails, you name it I’m writing…that’s because we are outside…so inspiring.

  2. I do a lot of writing in front of the computer, sadly enough. Lately though, it’s only been for classes. I’d like to start getting in the habit of getting up every morning and writing with a cup of coffee at the dining room table. That would involve cleaning it.

  3. I recently got a MacBook so now I do a lot of writing on the computer while sitting in my big comfy chair in front of the television…but my favorite place to write is the dining room table with a cup of coffee. It’s in front of the window looking out on our front lawn where my children play on the grass and the hummingbirds feed at the pretty stained glass feeder I bought. It’s very peaceful there.

  4. I write in the B&N coffeeshop with a huge cup of English Breakfast tea and a cinnamon scone. Even if I can’t write a word during the week, I have my Saturday mornings – and even if I just write a sentence or two, it’s still good.

  5. I usually write on my comfy office chair, which is next to my desk. I don’t actually sit at the desk to write. Often I’ll have one of my dogs sitting next to me and something cold (cranberry and seltzer with lots of ice to crunch) or hot (tea with milk crackers) to occupy me when I need to think.

    Great question!!

  6. I write a lot in my car. I tend to get places 1/2 hour early so that I have quiet time to write with no one needing me or knowing where I am. My car is a very fun black PT cruiser that I am seriously considering getting tricked out with flames. Otherwise, I love to write in bed. Again, completely alone. No one comes into my room. No phones, no TV, no interwebs.

  7. Very good question… and it appears as though a lot of us have the same habits! I tend to outline my works by hand, and write a few pages by hand as well. This usually happens in bed prior to sleep. Then, in the morning I get up (whenever right now as school is out for summer!) and transcribe, edit and add to what I wrote the night before on my computer. As I have a laptop, and thus the freedom that comes with it, this is usually either in front of the T.V. in a comfy chair (which hasn’t been working too well for me lately… aparently its distracting) or outside weather permitting. I’ve been spending some time in the afternoons outside at my family cottage killing two birds with one stone–sun worshiping (from the safty of SPF 45) and writing!

  8. Anywhere away from home. So many distractions. Plus I’m a freelance nonfiction writer as my paid job, which means when I’m in my home office, I feel compelled to work on the paying stuff. I’m great at coffee shops. I’ve seriously considered renting a writer’s studio at a local literary organization, the Loft ( They have little private studios, and friends of mine who have used them say they’re wonderfully productive there.

  9. I like to write at my kitchen table when the house is quiet or no one is home.
My writing is often partnered with a bug cup of tea!
